How their passion began: During Suzanna's last semester at Towson State University, Maryland, USA, she met Hans-Gerd, who was an exchange student from Oldenburg University, Germany, in a ballroom dance class. Did they meet by pure chance since Suzanna was a business major and Hans-Gerd was a Computer Science major, or was it predestination? Suzanna was secretly fond of Hans-Gerd but since he didn't show any interest and the awareness that she was going to return to Indonesia for good after her graduation, she disclosed her feeling. In fact she tried to avoid seeing Hans-Gerd again by not taking the second ballroom dance class. But then it didn't work out. They bumped into each other several times on campus, until finally in Nov 1993 Hans-Gerd asked Suzanna to come to the final ballroom dance party. After that dance, Suzanna and Hans-Gerd started to date. They had a chance to go to Florida and New Orleans to spend an unforgettable Christmas and New Year. Then, they also celebrated Hans-Gerd's birthday and Suzanna's graduation day. Even though Suzanna's mom was around and disapproved their relationship, they tried to spend as much time together as possible. Unfortunately, time was running out as Suzanna had to return to Indonesia for good in Feb 1994. It was the most difficult and painful time when the two 'love-birds' had to separate for the first time ever and didn't know when they will ever meet again or even be united forever. After Hans-Gerd finished his exchange program in Towson, he visited Suzanna in Jakarta specially to celebrate her birthday together and stayed there for a month. That was the first of several visits, which he made to Jakarta. Likewise, Suzanna also came to visit Hans-Gerd in Germany. Though they could not see each other often, they managed to overcome their loneliness and separation by communicating often in letters, e-mails, and nonetheless, by phones. Two people from a different country, culture, and family background met in a third country to find their life partner.
